Program Description

YCAP operates three shelters for homeless families with children. Two shelters are located in McMinnville and one is in Newberg. Each family is assigned one bedroom and must share the kitchen, bathroom, and living room facilities with the other residents in the shelter. Initial stay is approved for 3 - 6 months while residents reconstruct their lives to be more self-sufficient.

Eligibility

Our priority is to stabilize the living conditions for homeless families with children. The majority of the time the shelters are filled with families who have at least one minor child.

If space becomes available and there are no families needing shelter, we will place a homeless, single woman in the shelter for a short-term stay.

Adults must agree to a criminal background check and have no evidence of prior criminal activity which could jeopardize the safety of other shelter residents. Clients must agree to remain “clean and sober” during their shelter residence and must abide by the published shelter rules, including drug testing. Clients must also be willing to participate in case management activities.

When the shelters are filled to capacity, clients may be referred to alternative shelter resources in Yamhill or surrounding counties.

Types of Assistance

Shelter services include case management, goal setting information and referral services.

Procedure

Homeless families in need of shelter may be seen on a “walk-in” basis during office hours. Upon completion of an intake interview and signed releases, a criminal background check will be completed. If cleared, applicants are called back for an orientation and drug test. At times when there is no vacancy in any of the agency shelters, applicants will be placed on a waiting list and/or referred to other shelters within Yamhill or surrounding counties. Admission procedures may vary due to specific emergency needs.
